Searching for the Sweet Light
Landscape / Travel / Fine Art Photography

Course

The way we see is affected by the things we know, our education and upbringing or in what we believe. It can take years to develop "the art of seeing" but again, it is about who you are and what makes you tick that will greatly influence the type of images you will create. This quality is what I find most interesting in people. It helps us all to look at things from a different perspective. Remember the camera is an extension of your eye and mind. It can become the box of crayons you once owned when you were a child. Experts say our creative peak is around 5 years old -- just before we are sent off to school and bombarded with all sorts of rules.

As we press on to discover and experience regions through travel, our journeys take us to places some people may never visit, and for most, may never visit again. On these trips one wants to document where they have been and capture a sense of place in the destination. The camera then becomes our voice through visual interpretation of the landscape. In this intensive course you will learn how to create an effective photo essay that becomes your own personal interpretation of the places you visit. Good photographs are made not just taken – you will learn how to create an image not just take a picture. We will spend time in the Niagara region looking at places of interest where we can set our camera’s up to create your visual interpretation of the landscape. Through assignments, working on the computer in Photoshop, critiques of your work and slideshows, you will learn what it takes to be a more effective photographer.

Course Prerequisite:
To get the most out of this course, knowledge of where the camera controls are located (i.e. menu, white balance, f-stops & ISO etc) and how the camera works (i.e. f-stops and shutter speeds) are essential. Knowledge of Photoshop will help you in the post-processing phase of the image capture process. This workshop helps you to move out of your comfort zones as well as introducing you to new challenges with travel and landscape photography – assignments are designed around you knowing the fundamentals.

All participants need to bring the following:

• Footwear – walking shoes or hiking boots, as assignments will take us into the surrounding area.
• Clothing - please dress for the weather (we will shoot in the early morning and/or early evening) – you know what works best for you
• Rain jacket - unless a hurricane moves in - we will shoot in overcast and light rain (makes for great images)
• Sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
• Note pad and pen for taking field notes
• Equipment - bring what you normally shoot with, enough card space and a backpack or camera bag to put all into.
• Tripod
• ALARM CLOCK
• Flash (on camera flash works if you do not have a separate flash)
• The instruction book that came with the camera and flash– this is essential as problems do arise with the newer cameras, this helps to expedite the process of isolating any problem that might arise.
• Your laptop or desktop computer (you should bring a 20ft electrical extension and power bar in case of outlets being a distance from your classroom seat)
• Your card reader
• Don’t forget USB or firewire cords that you may need
• CDs / DVDs or external hard drives to save images
