Fong Shui Harmony - The Art of Posing and Lighting
With over 30 years practicing the Art of Photography, Hanson will demonstrate his successful techniques that apply to both portrait and wedding photography. Balancing the Art of Lighting and Posing, Hanson will teach you how to create perfect harmony, which will allow you to handle any subject’s body size and type. With the Classic 10 Poses, that Hanson mastered and pioneered, he will help you analyze different body sizes and types. You will learn to recognize the poses that will result in a proportional balance of the various body sizes to each other. His technique will enable you to pose any family grouping, couple, and bride & groom. The late legendary Rocky Gunn, Hanson’s mentor and teacher, inspired Hanson’s “Flow Posing” which is acknowledged and recognized internationally. In addition to the hands on posing techniques, Hanson will also teach lighting and metering techniques. You will be learning how to photograph under any lighting condition; indoors and outdoors- any place, anytime. Hanson’s approach to finding the proper light outdoors is simple and uncomplicated. Proper lighting and posing helps you to create highly desirable, beautiful and timeless portraits.
The key element to being a successful photographer is to make people look great. Hanson is known for his teaching skills as well as his photographic prowess. He shares all his secrets of success with you, his students.

Prerequisites for Hanson’s Class
This workshop is for photographers that have a basic understanding of light, composition and exposure. We will not be showing you how to set your shutter speed and f-stop. Participants should have a sound technical background of photographing with their digital SLR cameras in manual mode and using their own laptop/desktop computers to review, edit, save and store their images safety. Although this is not an advanced Photoshop workshop, a basic familiarity with your computer is essential. Computer literacy, navigation and mouse skills in Photoshop knowledge are also very helpful.
Student Equipment Required
- An example of a recent wedding you photographed – bring either a data DVD with up to 125 photographs on it or an actual wedding album (i.e. a sample album)
- Materials for album design exercise:
- Contact sheets (for use during the album design assignment) – using Photoshop or similar program, create a set of contact sheets and print on regular copy paper – roughly 20 photographs per letter-sized page- that has up to 125 photographs from one of your recent weddings
- Scotch tape
- Scissors
- 50 sheets of letter sized copy paper
- Your own laptop or desktop computer, with a version of Photoshop. (A 30 day trial version of Photoshop may be downloaded before you arrive at NSI) Your instructor will contact you by email to let you know if there are any specific software requirements for your course.
- Pencils, pens and notepads (you will be taking notes)
- Digital SLR camera and lenses, flashes, camera battery charger
- Compact flash card(s) – at least 1 gig of storage or more
- Portable flash, reflector – optional
- Manuals for all of the gear you will be using or have questions about
- Tripod
