Adobe Lightroom, Bridge and Photoshop Workflow

Course:
Brian’s course will give you the skills to improve your workflow efficiency and image quality using Adobe Lightroom, Bridge and Photoshop.
Topics will include:
- Effective use of white balance and in-camera exposure; understanding clipping as a control for exposure; pushing exposure to the max; RAW vs JPEG, exploring the advantages of each
- Importing and organizing images in Adobe Lightroom; working with collections and keywords
- Effective use of Lightroom’s Develop module; creating and modifying presets; understanding effects of develop controls; evaluating image colour and tone properties; predicting final output; saving over and underexposed images
- Creating Slideshows and custom templates
- Lightroom’s Print module; creating packages, Print Job controls
- Calibrating monitors and custom printer profiles; each student will create their own custom printer profiles for various papers
- Effective workflow with Adobe Bridge, InDesign and Photoshop; creating protected PDF files for proofing; coordinating images with Bridge, Photoshop and Lightroom
- Introductions to Apple’s Aperture program; tethered image capture with Aperture and Lightroom

Emphasis will be on creating predictable results starting from image capture to the final production of the finished image. Each day of the workshop will include hands-on practical sessions. Participants should bring their computer system, monitor(s), digital SLR and a printer.

Sunday August 22/10 |

Students are encouraged to arrive between 12 noon to 3 pm to set up their computer systems. Brian will be assisting students to set-up computers, monitors and printers. Setting up in the afternoon will ensure the class will start well prepared in the evening session. Also please bring your digital SLR. |

Setting up your Photoshop and Lightroom environment and preferences• Setting up Photoshop Color Settings, default workspace and profile principles • applying image variations using profiles • Using various profiles for different output devices • Colour calibration of monitors - how to produce expected results • Using monitor calibration hardware

Practical Session: Exposure and White Balance control • Custom white balances and colour temperature settings • Producing proper exposure using camera histogram • Students will photograph Raw and JPEG images for use in class • Understanding of clipping and how to use it to greatest advantage.

Practical Session: Students will be assigned a project to photograph, assemble and produce enhanced files under a specific time frame. The emphasis will be on applying tips for improved workflow. |

In Classroom: Using Lightroom’s Print module • Print templates • Setting up print jobs; printer profiles and colour management • Creating PDF presentations for proofing • Using Adobe InDesign with Bridge for custom proofing • Protecting images from copy and printing.
: Students will work on supplied and personal images. Emphasis will be on applying learned techniques to practical examples. Each student is encouraged to bring a project from his or her studio to work on. A class photo will be taken in the afternoon. |

Instructor:
Brian is a professor at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. He teaches conventional and digital photography to the second and third year advanced level students. Brian has been teaching digital imaging since 1992 when Fanshawe College offered the first major for Advanced Level Computer Imaging in Canada.
Brian is currently the chair of the National Exhibition Committee of PPOC and the Student Program liaison for PPO. He has taught his imaging workshops in cities across Canada.
